Why water hyacinth is a problem?
Water-hyacinth blocks waterways and limits boat traffic, recreation, flood control and wildlife use. By producing a dense canopy at the water surface, this exotic pest plant shades out native submersed plant species and can uproot native emergent species that are important to wildlife
What animal eats water hyacinth?
Both the adult and larval weed weevils eat water hyacinth and, by tunnelling into the plant, allow bacteria and fungi to invade the plant… But earthworm is no1 who love to eat water hyacinth.
How Earthworm Water Hyacinth Project Vietnam work?
From 2012, Anphu earthworm Co.,Ltd has launched campaign to help poor farmer along river to take water-hyacinth to raise earthworm.
By collecting water-hyacinth from river then put into pp pack, after 10 days, bring home and keep in dry and lean-to. Then put vermiculture (earthworm) into pack about 5kg. after 40 days the worm eat all food, this time we can harvest worm and casting.
The result of Earthworm Water Hyacinth Project Vietnam
After 6 months apply, each family has over 40 bins, every month they collect 30kg of worm to feed fish, chicken, duck, pig.. otherwise, the casting they got then can fertilize plant to give very high productivity. Beside that, they can sale worm to Anphu Co.,ltd with income over 1 million Vietnam dong per month.
With this campaign, farmer has a stable income and part to solve the pollution on the river of their own homeland. Thanks the God brings water-hyacinth to river to support their life!
